Schwan-STABILO turns first sod for expansion new building in Weißenburg

With a new building for a plastic injection moulding facility, Schwan-STABILO Cosmetics continues to expand plastics technology at the Weißenburg location.

Just last summer, after a mere six months of construction, the expansion of a state-of-the-art manufacturing hall for the STABILO subgroup was inaugurated. This amounted to an investment of approximately 1.7 million Euro. More than triple that amount, approximately 6 million Euro, is what the Cosmetics subgroup will invest in new construction this year. Ground for the plastic injection moulding facility was broken on April 10th, 2008.
In the near future, the STABILO subgroup will invest a further 4 million Euro in new materials handling equipment to further expand the logistics centre from which Europe-wide logistics are already controlled. More than 1 billion injection moulded components are produced annually at the Weißenburg location. These are products from which popular STABILO writing utensils such as the brand product STABILO BOSS and the trend line ’s move easy are created. They also include caps, bottles and applicators for cosmetic pens, which Schwan-STABILO Cosmetics manufactures for renowned international cosmetics companies.

As market leader in the field of cosmetic pens, Schwan-STABILO Cosmetics designs and produces any colour imaginable in plastic. The new plastic injection moulding facility will house mould and die production, quality assurance, a colour laboratory, pigment storage as well as office space and a technology area. In the near future, over 90 highly qualified employees will be working here. "Our expertise in Weißenburg has progressed far beyond the injection moulding of high precision plastic components necessary for our own production of cosmetics products," says Ulrich Griebel, CEO of the Cosmetics subgroup. “The new factory features a high performance tool shop that not only manufactures and maintains injection moulding tools but also provides global tool technology to advise and help our subsidiaries. In the same way, the Weißenburg colour lab provides subsidiaries and suppliers with recipes and colour mixtures to ensure that the desired lipstick is the same colour all over the world, regardless of whether it is manufactured for the Brazilian or the US market."

The new plastic injection moulding facility has a planned area of 3000 m2 and a useable area of 4000 m2 on two levels. The building is to be around 9 m in height and hasan enclosed space of approximately 29,000 m3. The structural work is scheduled to be finished by the beginning of August 2008. Completion is set for December 2008.
